The fix that solves most of it
If you read one thing on this page: Windows usually classifies the LanOrbit adapter as a Public network, and most games are only allowed through the firewall on Private ones. That single mismatch causes empty server lists, invites that never arrive, and rooms where everyone is connected but nobody sees anybody.

Open Windows Defender Firewall
Control Panel › System and Security › Windows Defender Firewall, then Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall.
-
Click Change settings
Without it the checkboxes stay greyed out. You need administrator rights on the machine.
-
Find the game's executable and tick Public
Tick Private too if it isn't already. If several entries match the same game, tick all of them — Windows often keeps duplicates from earlier installs.
-
Restart the game, not just the menu
Most old titles read the firewall state once, at launch. Restart the game, rejoin the room, then try again.
